Well, Mathematics is one such subject that has been often regarded as boring by youngsters of our generation. But these young fellows fail to identify the magic of the mind, an exhilarated exercise of the brain which shapes your mind into a quick catcher and a quick learner. It forms your brain with incredibly high intelligence quotient and a person who masters math can master the world.
One such person is Dr. Surajit Chattopadhyay who started his career by completing his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from St Xavier’s College, Calcutta in the year 1997 and again went on to do M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Jadavpur University in 1999. He has scored 90.31 percentile in GATE for Mathematical Sciences paper in the year 2003. He also accomplished Ph.D. (Science) in Mathematics (Gravitation and Cosmology) from Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology, Shibpur (IIEST) in 2010.
After working as a guest lecturer in the Dept. of Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Calcutta for a few years, Dr. Chattopadhyay began his journey as a regular faculty member in Pailan College of Management & Technology, Kolkata, where he had enlightened students for more than a decade. He is presently an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics, Amity Institute of Applied Sciences, Amity University, Kolkata.
Dr. Chattopadhyay is actively engaged in research on theoretical cosmology, with emphasis on dark energy and modified gravity theories. Statistical modeling of meteorological processes is also within the purview of his interests.
Till date, Dr. Chattopadhyay has 165 publications of which 127 are Scopus indexed and published in various journals and conference proceedings published by Springer, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, and other journals/organizations of national and international repute. Since 2011, he has been a Visiting Associate of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune. Very recently, he has been selected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, India and the International Astronomical Union (IAU), France. An active participant of national and international conferences, he has delivered talks in various conferences in India and abroad including the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Thailand.
Besides teaching and research, he has been reviewing research papers of various international journals published by Springer, Elsevier and other journals that have a prestigious status. A member of exalted professional bodies like European Physical Society, Institute of Physics (London) and Astronomical Society of India, Dr. Chattopadhyay’s research is often facilitated by travel grant that is sponsored by SERB, CSIR, Government of India, CICS, and International Astronomical Union. Dr. Chattopadhyay has presented his research works in various conferences in India as well as abroad. He has delivered talks in conferences held in the Netherlands, Republic of Slovenia, Thailand, and Italy. Also, he is in collaboration with scientists from countries including Romania, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan.
Dr. Chattopadhyay is actively engaged as peer-reviewer in various high-impact journals published by Springer, Elsevier, Wiley etc. Also, he has completed one funded project of SERB, Govt of India as the Principal Investigator and is currently carrying out another project funded by CSIR. He is also engaged as a reviewer for different funding agencies.
What more could we ask from a person his age to be able to achieve such a legendary feat in such a short duration of time. He has enlightened students of Pailan College of Management and Technology for more than a decade and reached the post of Associate Professor proving that big things take time and it’s not the right time to quit anyhow. Go forward and make it happen. The future lies in your hands.
